Department of Education - Marown Languages Centre - Yn Ynnyd Chengey

Marown Old School, Old Church Road, Crosby Tel: (01624) 852389

Situated in a former Primary school, in a picturesque rural setting, the Marown Language Centre (or in Manx - Yn Ynnyd Chengey) is a unique modern foreign language facility in the centre of the Isle of Man. The centre provides foreign language experiences for groups of primary school pupils, which complement and enhance the French courses taught in the Island’s schools.

Visiting Primary schools take part in several activities, each to be performed in a small group of three to six students, with 20 minutes allocated per task. Students work through the stimulating and varied tasks on a carousel basis.

The activity menu is as follows:

  • using computers
  • shopping for postcards and souvenirs
  • comprehension of audio recordings
  • responding to video recordings
  • ordering and partaking of a snack from a French-style café
  • playing boules
  • sampling French cheeses
  • participating in a traditional Breton dance

These tasks allow pupils to display language skills that they have developed at school and help to improve confidence by applying these skills to more authentic tasks, while at the same time being an enjoyable experience that benefits group morale.

The Language Centre is the base for the 13 members of the peripatetic Primary Modern Languages Team, where planning meetings take place and teaching materials etc. are prepared. It is also a venue for in-service courses held periodically throughout the year.
