Martin Barrow, Director of Education
- Deputises for the CEO in his absence
- Provides strategic leadership and direction for the education aspect of the Department of Education and Children's remit
- Coordinates all monitoring and evaluation of schools
- Line manages and assures the work of all advisers
- Undertakes inspection, review and validation exercises in schools
- Is responsible for the appointment of all senior staff in schools and at the Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education
- Contributes to the strategic leadership of the Safeguarding Children Board and sits on the Serious Case Review Panel.
Paul Craine, Coordinating Adviser 11-19 Education
- Contributes to the overall leadership of the Education Improvement Service and the DEC's Senior Management Team
- Links with senior leaders in the DEC's five secondary schools
- Analyses examination results, holds schools to account and reports back to the Department and to school governing bodies
- Coordinates support for secondary newly qualified teachers and assures the quality of this provision
- Undertakes review and validation exercises in secondary schools
- Chairs the 14-19 Consortium
- Represents the DEC on the Religious Education and Advisory Council (REAC)
- Represents the DEC on Sector Skills Groups
- Leads the development of Careers Education Framework
- Coordinates support and development for the secondary curriculum.
Jan Gimbert, School Improvement Adviser (Secondary)
- Links with middle leaders in all five secondary schools, providing support and challenge to secure Departmental improvement and validating the judgments in each department’s Self Review and Evaluation
- Contributes to review and validation exercises in secondary schools
- Acts as link adviser to the Music Service
- Coordinates the process to support pupils’ transition from Year 6 to Year 7
- Line manages the Physical and Emotional Health Education Officer
- Coordinates the development programme for secondary school middle leaders.
Geoff Moorcroft, Co-ordinating Adviser for Primary Education
- Contributes to the overall leadership of the Education Improvement Service and the DEC's Senior Management Team
- Coordinates advice and support for primary schools
- Acts as link adviser to a number of primary schools, providing support and challenge to secure school improvement andvalidating t judgments in each schools Self Review and Evaluation
- Contributes to review and validation exercises in schools
- Coordinates support and development for the primary curriculum
- Coordinates support and development of initiatives that ensure that the curriculum offered in schools reflects the unique geographic, cultural and historical heritage of the Island and line manages the advisory teacher for the Manx curriculum
- Coordinates development of Philosophy for Children (P4C) across schools
- Coordinates support for maths in primary schools and moderation of assessment
- Coordinates support for primary newly qualified teachers and assures the quality of this provision.
Jayne Adamson, School Improvement Adviser (Primary)
- Acts as link adviser to a group of primary schools and the Pre-School Assessment Centre, providing support and challenge to secure school improvement and validating the judgments in each school’s Self Review and Evaluation
- Contributes to review and validation exercises in schools
- Coordinates support and development for early years professionals, including those in private and voluntary settings, and moderation of assessment in schools
- Leads the development and implementation of the Manx Step into Quality Award and Manx Quality Award for early years settings
- Coordinates the Department's training programme for all staff working in classrooms
- Coordinates the support for pupils who have English as an additional language (EAL) across all schools and line manages the advisory teacher for EAL.
Christine Callaghan, School Improvement Adviser (Primary)
- Acts as link adviser to a group of primary schools, providing support and challenge to secure school improvement and validating the judgments in each school's Self Review and Evaluation.
- Coordinates support for English in primary schools and moderation of assessment
- Contributes to review and validation exercises in schools
- Coordinates the Department's approaches to assessment and its application across all aspects of primary education
- Is a tutor for the Post Graduate Certificate in School Leadership and Managament, which the DEC offers in association with the University of Chester.
Mal Keary, Physical and Emotional Health Education Officer
- Co-ordinates initiatives across the Department's schools and the Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education that support the development of positive student physical and emotional health.
Jo Callister, Advisory Teacher (Manx Curriculum)
- Works closely with a range of organisations including Manx National Heritage, the Manx Heritage Foundation and the Arts Council to develop and deliver a Manx dimension to all areas of the curriculum. Delivery of this includes working closely with teachers and leading workshops for children.
Susan Rossouw, Advisory Teacher (English as an Additional Language)
- Works with pupils, parents and teacher to ensure there is appropriate support where English as an Additional Language across schools. This involves both direct contact and managing the work of other staff who undertake this work within schools. Currently more than 600 children across 25 schools with 37 different native languages are receiving this support to enable them to access school.
