Education and Children

Education Council

The Education Council sits as an advisory body to the Department of Education and Children.

Members are appointed by the Appointments Commission, an independent body created by the Council of Ministers. The current Education Council came into existence on 1st December 2012.

Members of the Education Council:

Discuss and advise the Department on any matter of educational policy
Discuss and inform the Department of its views concerning the needs of the statutory system of public education
Receive and consider any reports submitted to it by the Department
When authorised by the Department, formulate for consideration by the Department policies concerning: primary, secondary, continuing and higher education; the education of pupils with special needs andthe functions of the Department in relation to youth and community services
Serve as governors on at least three governing bodies of the Department's schools, typically one secondary and two primary
Make appointments to the Religious Education Advisory Committee and trustee bodies in respect of some charities and endowments.
