Isle of Man Ship Registry enjoys a positive 2009 Gross tonnage grows 10% and Far East Market Developed
![]() | The Isle of Man’s Ship Registry continues to expand despite some very difficult economic times being experienced by world shipping. In 2009 the register grew by 1.03 million gross registered tons to a new high of 10.76 million at the end of the year, a net increase of over 10%.
This growth has been driven primarily through the introduction of new clients from the Far East who have registered some of their prestigious new supertankers in the Isle of Man following a targeted marketing drive by the DTI’s Ship Registry team in the region.
As a measure of the Isle of Man’s standing globally, the register is now listed among the top 20 registers in the world in terms of registered tonnage while operating in an extremely competitive environment of over 130 international ship registries.
In addition to the merchant ship growth, the Isle of Man added another 17 commercially operated super yachts to the register during the year. The majority of these are managed locally providing significant work for local specialists.

Isle of Man Visit Germany
![]() | The Isle of Man Ship Registry values both its existing and potential client base, as a result of which Dave Morter Deputy Director and Anne Blythe Senior Registrar have just completed a visit to Bremen, Leer and Hamburg. The visit included shipowners who already have ships registered on the Island, shipowners who could potentially register vessels on the Island and various law firms. Such a visit is very important both for the Ship Registry and for the client as it is a reminder that we are out there, responsive to their needs and want to provide them with the best service possible. The visit highlighted the latest developments in the Ship Registry with great emphasis on the quality of the register. It is also illustrative of the personal touch which the Isle of Man Ship Registry prides itself upon. The visit was worthwhile not only to receive client feedback but also to return to the Island with increased tonnage. |

Staying the Course as the Storm Clouds Hover
![]() | 16th November 2009 ‘Staying the Course as the Storm Clouds Hover’ The Isle of Man Ship Registry is maintaining its position by being innovative in introducing an annual fee of $1,000 per ship from 1st April 2010.
This is the headline in a Financial Times supplement on the Isle of Man, focussing on the Ship Registry. Since its inception some 25 years ago, the Ship Registry has been fully government subsidised as a means of stimulating a shipping sector. This has been very effective. The number of vessels registered is now 1,070.
The Ship Registry is to introduce an annual fee that will enable it to cover much of its running costs and pay its 32 staff and provide more clarity to potential clients when looking to choose a register. Dick Welsh, the burly rugby-playing Manxman who runs the register said “We recognise the need to provide some form of fee to reduce the deficit. We discussed it with businesses and they think that is reasonable,” he says. “In fact, it might help us because while we are free, people think there must be a catch or a hidden charge somewhere.”
“We offer unmatched quality of service,” he adds. High quality as well as low prices will assure the island’s shipping future.
