Welcome to Employment Services. We deal with the following areas, and look forward to assisting you, or your company:

The JobCentre based on Prospect Hill is the ideal way to either find jobs, or advertise vacancies for free. In many cases the JobCentre also retains application forms for most of the Island’s major employers. The job list created by the JobCentre is updated daily, and can be viewed at any Post Office, library, or regional DHSS office Island-wide, and on-line. The JobCentre can provide interview facilities for those wishing to employ, and can provide information and advice for those wishing to undertake further training. The JobCentre also offers a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae word processing service.
Investors in People
Investors in People is about developing people in an organisation, the benefits of which are felt on the bottom line. It is the National Standard that sets a level of good practice for improving an organisation’s performance through its people. The Standard provides a national framework for cohesive action through:
- specifying the principles which tie training and development activity directly to business objectives;
- ensuring resources committed to training and development are put to the most effective use;
- providing a clear benchmark of good practice in training and development against which any organisation, whatever its size, can measure progress towards improved business performance.
Small Business Start Up Scheme
The Small Business Start Up Scheme is a business awareness programme, designed to:
- help you decide whether self-employment is really right for you;
- help you think through the viability of your business ideas;
- train you in basic business skills such as how to keep financial records;
- give you the know-how to prepare a business plan and cash flow forecast – the vital blue prints for your business.
The Scheme consists of two main elements, a training course and assistance from a business adviser. Financial assistance is available from the Department on a discretionary basis – funding is not guaranteed.
Shell Technology & Enterprise Programme
The Shell Technology & Enterprise Programme (STEP) is a highly respected and unique initiative, which has been operating in the UK since 1986. STEP currently places over 1,500 undergraduates each year with employers on specific projects for eight weeks during the summer. A local competition is held at the end of August with the winner proceeding to a UK regional competition and, if successful, the UK national final.
To be eligible for a STEP placement students must be in their second or penultimate year on a full time degree or HND course at a University or College in the UK or Isle of Man. For participating students, this can lead to potential recruitment or improved potential for employment on completion of their studies.
Companies are given the opportunity to take an issue facing them and turn it into a definable and structured project. By engaging a student for a STEP project, companies benefit from fresh ideas and new skills that can result in the development of existing technologies or processes in their businesses.
Disability Employment Service
The Service helps to enable disabled people claiming benefits to find or retain sustained work. We work closely with employers in supporting and encouraging good employment practices and attitudes in the recruitment and the retention of disabled people. We also work closely with external organisations to improve mutual referral arrangements and employment related provision.
Employment Agencies
All employment agencies, and employment businesses operating from premises within or from the Isle of Man should be licensed for the protection of all concerned. In this way we ensure that high standards are maintained in this sector of employment.
Employment Tribunal
The Employment Tribunal resolves disputes between employers and employees over employment rights.
Work Permits
Almost everybody unconnected with the Island who comes here to work will require a work permit whether they are from within the European Union or the rest of the world . The Work Permit Office is responsible for processing these applications. The staff also assist the Work Permit Committee in looking at the more sensitive applications. This integral office is at the heart of government’s strategy for a fully diverse economy.
