Different Waste Types

Household Waste

Bulky household waste can be delivered to your local Civic Amenity Site for disposal, free of charge.

Please see the map and contact details for the Civic Amenity Sites on the Island.

Construction and Demolition Waste

This should preferably be separated at source for recycling and reuse or delivered to an appropriate facility for disposal.

Clinical Waste

At present, clinical waste from the hospital and residential homes is collected by the Department of Health and Social Security through the Noble's Hospital porter system. However, this function will pass to the new Waste Management Board once it is formed. The Board will undertake the collection of clinical waste from producers at a charge that reflects the cost of the service.

In advance of this, all producers of clinical waste are invited to contact this Department to discuss and organise future collection and charging.

Problematic Waste (waste for which there is no licenced facility for disposal on the Island)

The Department will continue to dispose of problematic waste by removing the waste from source and storing it at a secure site, currently at Jurby, until the new problematic waste store is built at the rear of the Energy from Waste Facility. The problematic waste is shipped 2-3 times per year to the UK for disposal, on each occasion following approval of a Transfrontier Shipping (TFS) Order.

Animal Waste

Animal waste is currently being disposed of at the By-products Plant in East Baldwin. Once the Energy from Waste plant is operational all animal waste will be disposed of in the secondary waste stream.
