Waste Management
Functions
The Waste Management Operations Unit (WOMU) is responsible for the implementation of the agreed waste strategy for the Isle of Man. WOMU aims to minimize, re-use and recycle as much of the waste generated as possible before providing disposal routes at either the Energy from Waste Facility or into landfill.
Waste Strategy
The Department of Local Government and the Environment is undertaking a review of the way waste is currently managed, and should be managed, on the Island over the next 10-20 years. This includes a review of the Waste Management Plan 2000 as, since that time, there have been considerable changes in the way in which waste is managed on the Island and how it is considered in the global context of managing resources.
Two Reports have been issued as part of the review of the Island's Waste Strategy. For further information on the background to these Reports and to view/download copies of them, visit the Department's recycling web pages.
Kerbside Collection
Following recognition by Tynwald that the need for kerbside recycling should form part of a long-term strategy for managing the Island's household waste, the Department and representatives from Local Authorities formed a partnership Kerbside Collection Working Party (KCWP). The Party's remit was to research the options for, and costs of, implementing kerbside collection of recyclable materials throughout the Island.
A firm of consultants were appointed to work with the KCWP to provide technical guidance, collate data, and consider options for introduction of kerbside collection. For information on progress in this area, and to view/download a Final Options Appraisal Report, visit the Department's recycling web pages.
