PAPER
TYPES OF PAPER RECYCLED
On the Isle of Man, there are two main grades of paper currently collected for recycling as follows:
1) Newspapers & magazines from households
YES PLEASE - Newspapers, glossy magazines, junk mail, soft-backed catalogues, white paper, envelopes (with or without windows)
NO THANKS - Telephone directories, milk cartons, cardboard, plastic bags, wrapping paper & craft paper
2) Office white paper (also known as 'MULTIGRADE') is collected from offices and workplaces by commercial companies
This type of paper is collected by commercial recycling companies from offices, banks, and business. Both confidential and non-confidential paper is collected for shredding (if appropriate) and onward recycling. Local companies offering paper recycling servcies include:
Doxbond (Tel: 670151) ; Storall / Strand Cleaners (Tel:663913) ; Securicor (Tel: 649000)
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PAPER?
Newspapers and magazines are quality sorted and stored by SITA IoM before being shipped off-Island by ICD Hauliers to the UK's largest paper recycling mill, UPM Kymmene, based in Shotton, North Wales. The mill manufactures huge rolls of recycled newsprint which are sold to newspsper publishing groups including Isle of Man Newspapers who use it to produce our local papers (e.g. Courier, The Examiner) so we really are closing the recycling loop.
RECYCLING SUBSIDY SCHEME
In order to support local recycling companies which collect paper for reycling, the Department of Local Government and the Environment pays these companies a subsidy for every tonne of paper shipped to the UK for recycling.
