Strategic Plan
The Department has a statutory obligation to prepare an Island Development Plan Under Part 1 Section 2 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1999. This is referred to as the development plan
. The development plan consists of a Strategic Plan and one or more Area Plans.
The Strategic Plan is a written statement, which details the Department's general policies in respect of development and other use of land in the Island along with justification for the policies.

The Strategic Plan Now In Operation
A Modified Draft Written Statement was issued for consultation from 26 April 2007 through to 25 May 2007. A number of representations were made from interested parties and all of these were considered by the Department. As a consequence, some further changes were made to the Draft Plan. A schedule outlining the nature of all these comments and how they were considered by the Department is available to view or download from the table, below. In addition to this, some further minor amendments to the document were made to clarify statements and update information before the Strategic Plan was finalised.
A copy of the final version of the Strategic Plan, which was adopted by the Department, is available to view or download from the table, below. Alternatively, hard copies can be viewed and/or purchased at the Department's counter on the first floor, Murray House, Mount Havelock, Douglas. See Contact Details.
The Plan was debated in Tynwald at the July 2007 sitting, and Tynwald approved an Order, which brought the adopted Plan into operation on 1 August 2007. The Plan was formally published and the Public Notice relating to this can be viewed in the table, below.
Next Steps
Work has now commenced on the preparation of Area Plans.
A key element of the Strategic Plan is the Monitoring and Review of the Plan, and the Department is committed to producing an Annual Monitoring Report.
