Southern Area Plan
Latest News
The Draft Southern Area Plan was published on 23rd October 2009 and is open for consultation until Friday 29th January 2010. As an element of this, the Department held a Public Consultation Event in the Methodist Church Hall, Arbory Street, Castletown on Thursday 14th, Friday 15th and Saturday 16th January. At the event, members of the public were able to speak to Officers of the Department and view copies of the Draft Area Plan for the South.
The event proved to be very popular with over 150 people attending to discuss a range of topics from what was happening in their immediate area to proposals which would influence the development of the whole of the South of the Island.
What’s happening?
The Department of Local Government and the Environment (DLGE) is taking steps in the preparation of the Area Plan for the South of the Island.
This follows on from the Publication, in 2007, of a Strategic Plan, containing broad policies covering the whole of the Island. Click here to find out more about the Strategic Plan.
The Area Plan for the South will include policies which guide development at the local level and will cover Rushen, Arbory, Malew, Port St Mary, Port Erin and Castletown (see map - right).
Why do we need an Area Plan?
The Plan will aim to guide development to those areas where the Island and its people can gain most from it and where it has the least adverse impact.
How will it happen?
There is a detailed process for preparing the Plan. Click here to find out further detailed information about the process. A provisional timetable is given at the bottom of this page.
What is the status of the current Local Plans in the South?
The current plans in the South will remain in operation until the new Plan has been approved, but some weight may also be accorded to the new Plan as it emerges.
How long will it take?
It is envisaged that the process from start to finish will take in the region of two years.
What stage are we at now?
Following the consultation on the Issues and Options document and the "Call for Sites" exercise, the Department has now published the Draft Plan, which is made up of a Written Statement and a series of proposals maps, all of which are available below, under "What has been published?". This Written Statement sets out the focus for new development within the Southern Area and includes detailed polices and proposals to guide how this development should take place. It also highlights those special areas within the South which require protection.
Click here to see a list of all of the sites considered following the “Call for Sites” exercise.
How to get involved?
The Planning Policy Team now needs people to comment on the Draft Plan. It is an important part of the plan preparation process to find out what people like or dislike about what is proposed.
Comments should be made by Friday 29th January 2010 in writing to the address below and where appropriate should clearly reference the relevant paragraph or site to which the comment refers to. To assist in this, the document includes paragraph numbers, and sites are each given a reference number. Written comments should be referred to: Planning Policy Team, Planning and Building Control Directorate, Department of Local Government and the Environment, Murray House, Mount Havelock, Douglas, IM1 2SF. If commenting electronically, please email Areaplansouth@dlge.gov.im
Please note that all comments will be made available for public inspection, if requested.
All comments received will be reviewed by the Planning Policy Team and where appropriate, changes will be made to the Plan with the agreement of the Department. A Modified Draft Southern Area Plan will then be published.
Why get involved?
This is your local area and you can help decide how it might look in the future. Your views and experience are vital to the planning team to enable them to devise policies which can assist in creating the places you want to live, work and spend time in.
