The Historic Buildings Conservation Scheme 2006

The above Scheme was introduced to take into account the additional financial burden to owners of historic buildings. It provides grant assistance for three main types of building, up to the following rates -

  • Registered Buildings (internal and external works) - 60% of the approved cost;
  • Properties in Conservation Areas (external works) - 50% of the approved cost; and
  • Pre 1921 buildings (repairs to windows and doors or replacement of inappropriate windows and doors) – 40% of the approved cost.

Please note that the figures shown above are the MAXIMUM levels of assistance available, and that the amount varies depending on the nature of works applied for.

How do you apply for assistance?

To view a flowchart showing all the stages of an application for assistance download the relevant document from the document table at the bottom of the page.

You will note from the flowchart, that the first stage involves the completion of a form (Form 1) notifying the Department of your intention to apply for grant aided works. Download a form from the document table at the bottom of the page.

Do works require planning or registered building approval?

Works which may be eligible for grant assistance may also require a statutory approval. To view a schedule which indicates the statutory approvals that apply to different types of works undertaken, download the Historic Buildings Conservation Scheme 2006 document from the document table at the bottom of the page. To download the application forms as regards statutory approvals, please go to Making an Application and download Application for Planning Approval (Form PA1.4) for external works and an Application for Registered Building Consent (RBAP) for internal works.
