Functions
Local Authorities are bound by statutory functions, legislation and proceedings. An outline of these duties are contained in a General Information Handbook, which was written for the benefit of the elected members of all local authorities on the Island. It also includes an explanation of the history of local government on the Island. To view the Handbook download the pdf from the document table at the bottom of the page.
The booklet was created and issued by the Department’s Local Government Unit, which was set up in 1999 as a central support and advice area for the Island’s Local Authorities.
Please note that there have been some legislative changes, which are not incorporated in the booklet.
