Elections

Following the recent Local Authority elections in April 2008, by-elections have been held in Port St Mary and Rushen. This is because the required number of candidates was not reached in the main elections. By-Elections will also be held in Bride, Patrick, Peel and Port Erin for the same reason. For further information on those individual elections, please contact the relevant Local Authority. Please click here for a list of Local Authority contact details.

Members of Local Authorities can make a real difference to the environment and quality of life in their areas, and indeed to the rates bills that have to be paid by residents and businesses. They also speak as representatives of their communities in discussion of wider issues affecting the Island as a whole.

Local Authorities are responsible for setting the rates for their areas and are involved in a range of issues (varying according to the size of the authority) including refuse collection, housing, planning, parking, environmental health, street lighting, parks, playgrounds and other public facilities such as public conveniences and libraries.

Local Authorities are bound by statutory functions, legislation and proceedings. An outline of these duties and an explanation of the history of Local Government on the Island are covered in a General Information Handbook prepared by the Department. Click here for a link to that document.

Further information on Local elections, including the results from the April elections, is available on the 3Legs.com website.
