General Housing Information

Manx FlatEligibility for a public sector house in the Isle of Man is dependent upon certain criteria, which are covered on our Acceptance Criteria and Points Scheme page. The main areas to note are that, to qualify, you will need to have been resident on the Island for at least 10 years, and that there is an income limit. Also, you must be 18 years of age or older. If you feel you qualify, and in order to apply for acceptance onto the Department of Local Government and the Environment public sector housing list, you will find a downloadable application form on the Acceptance Criteria and Points Scheme page, also.

Public sector housing in the Isle of Man is provided by a variety of Housing Authorities, which manage different areas of the Island. These areas consist of Braddan, Castletown, Douglas, Onchan, Peel, Port Erin, Port St Mary and Ramsey. The Department of Local Government and the Environment (DLGE) provides public sector housing in areas where there is no functioning Housing Authority. See the contacts list at the bottom of the page for contact details of all the Housing Authorities on the Island.

The Department’s public sector housing is located in various areas within the Island and totals approximately 1200 houses. Follow the link to the Map to see where DLGE’s public sector houses are situated. To see if your DLGE home has any housing maintenance planned, then follow the link to Maintenance for the downloadable table with the approximate schedule.

New Web Pages on Public Sector Housing

In October 2008, the Department added a host of new pages on its website relating to public sector housing. The reason for this was to provide information on a range of issues that are likely to be experienced by public sector tenants, and to inform the public about how properties are administered. For example, there are details of the criteria for entrance onto Housing Waiting Lists, and the allocation of properties.Bretney, Jurby

The new pages include information and advice on the following areas:

  • Acceptance Criteria and Points System;
  • Your Tenancy;
  • Rent Payment;
  • Anti-Social Behaviour;
  • Repairs and Maintenance;
  • Moving, Transfers and Exchanges;
  • Sheltered Housing; and
  • Useful Contacts

All of the pages contained on the above subjects are available to view by referring to the menus on the left hand side of this page.

Among the new pages is an on-line repairs form, which can be completed and submitted by tenants in respect of repairs required to a public sector house administered by the Department. Click on the following link to the request a repair form. For repairs to houses not administered by the Department, please contact the relevant Housing Authority. Contact details are available at the bottom of this page.

Newsletters

The Department issues periodic newsletters to provide updates on various issues, for example, the status of new constructions or refurbishments, and the impact on tenants. Please see copies of the latest newsletters in the downloadable table at the bottom of the page.
