Local Government Unit
The Local Government Unit was set up in 1999 by the Department as a central support and advice area for the Island’s Local Authorities
Mrs Carole Sutherland is Manager of the Unit and is available to discuss with Local Authorities any areas of legislation and current issues, and to support them in the efficient and effective delivery of service to ratepayers. The Local Government Unit has prepared a General Information Handbook, which is intended to provide local authorities with an outline of the areas for which they have responsibility. The handbook is available to download in pdf format from the documents table at the bottom of the page. Please note that the handbook is being updated, and a revised version will be posted on this page in due course.
As part of its functions, the Unit provides Induction Courses for new Commissioners/Councillors, or staff of Local Authorities (as well as acting as a refresher for those with longer service).
