SOCIAL SECURITY - WHAT DO WE DO?

Social Security is a Division of the DHSS. We are responsible for the administration of the Island's Social Security benefits, the National Insurance contributions system and arrangements for occupational and personal pension schemes in relation to contributions.

We have offices in Douglas, Ramsey, Castletown and Port Erin. Our head-office is in Markwell House, Market Street, Douglas.

We provide benefits for:

The Social Security Division has ten policy objectives :-

  1. To provide a comprehensive programme of benefits which, having regard to wider social and economic policies, is efficient and up-to-date, effective in meeting genuine need, encourages independence and provides incentives to work.
  2. To achieve greater awareness by people of the Island of the various elements of the Social Security programme so as to improve -
    • the understanding of benefit entitlements and contribution liabilities
    • the take-up of benefits
    • the payment of contributions
    and thus assisting in individual choices about additional personal contingency provision.
  3. To pay benefits, arrange for the collection and recording of National Insurance contributions and carry out such other relevant services efficiently in accordance with the law and in a manner consistent with the needs of the individual.
  4. To achieve, in the pursuit of good quality care services, effective, efficient and economical administration and use of resources - personnel, supplies, facilities etc and the requisite finance - based on a belief in value for money and public accountability, the optimum use of information technology and the need for a well trained and motivated staff.
  5. To develop comprehensive information systems to support the management and policy making process.
  6. To improve public awareness and understanding of the Department's services and the limits on those services.
  7. To improve internal communications with and across service organisations and at all levels of responsibility.
  8. To ensure that management and organisational structures are consistent with the need for effective, efficient and economical administration and use of resources.
  9. To develop the quality of services to the public.
  10. To promote high standards in the management of health and safety issues.
