What is it?
Family Income Supplement (FIS) is payable to you if you are employed or self-employed working for 16 hours or more per week and you are -
- a single person or a member of a couple and you have at least one child living with you; or
- a married couple or civil partners (whether or not you are bringing up children); or
- responsible for, and living in the same household as, a disabled person
Basic qualifying condition
To qualify for FIS you must -
- work for at least 16 hours a week in a job that is expected to last for five weeks or more from the week of claim; and
- have a total family income that falls short of a prescribed amount (certain types of income being ignored for the purposes of calculating income).
you must normally also satisfy a residential qualification, that is, you or your partner (if you have one) must -
- have been born on the Island; or
- have lived here for at least 6 months, or
- qualify as an "Isle of Man worker" for work permit purposes.
If you are not residentially qualified we may still be able to pay you FIS if you have exceptional circumstances. You should contact the FIS Unit at Markwell House for further details.
How much could I get and how am I paid?
FIS can be awarded for periods from 4 to 26 weeks and will not usually be affected by changes in circumstances during an award period. When FIS is in payment for one child only and that child leaves full-time non-advanced education, benefit is usually withdrawn from that date. Child benefit may still continue until the usual terminal date. FIS is paid either weekly by cheque or fortnightly, in arrears, directly into your bank or building society account.
How and when should I apply?
Use the claim form and return it to Family Income Supplement Unit, 1st Floor, Markwell House, Market Street, Douglas. Payslips or other proof of earnings from your employer should be submitted with your claim.
What else might I be able to claim?

- Free prescriptions
- Free dental treatment
- Vouchers to help with the cost of glasses
- Help with the expenses of a new baby
- Free School Meals
- Additional help with the cost of a funeral
