"Bereavement Benefits"
is the generic term for the Bereavement Allowance, Widowed Parent's Allowance and the Bereavement Payment. Please click on the links below to find out more about
these benefits.
Basic qualifying conditions
To qualify for bereavement benefits your late spouse or civil partner must have paid National Insurance (NI) contributions. Your own contributions do not count. You can claim bereavement benefits if you were legally married to your late spouse or in a civil partnership.
You cannot get bereavement benefits if -
- you are divorced from your late spouse or your civil partnership has been dissolved;
- you remarry or reform a different civil partnership;
- you are living with someone else as husband, wife or civil partner without being legally married or in a legal civil partnership, or
- you are in prison or being held in legal custody; or
- are over state pension age.
