CHILDREN'S TOYS DONATED TO AMBULANCE SERVICE

The Department has thanked local businessman Paul Hampton for his very generous donation towards the purchase of individually wrapped toys for children, who are transported by ambulance to Noble’s. Until recently, the Isle of Man Ambulance Service carried soft toys for comforting children when transporting them to hospital.

However, due to the possibility of cross infection, the Ambulance Service has had to remove all toys from the ambulances. Unfortunately, this has impacted on the ability of staff to provide distraction and comfort to their poorly patients in an unfamiliar environment.

A project undertaken by crew members Norman Brew, Paramedic and Sue Wheeler Technician, found that providing each child with their own individually wrapped toy was the best solution. Local businesses were contacted to see if they were able to provide sponsorship to the Ambulance Service, so that enough toys could be purchased and individually packaged for each child transported, thereby meeting infection control requirements. Local businessman, Paul Hampton (Paul Hampton Cleaning Services) approached Norman and Sue with a generous donation that has enabled the Ambulance Service to provide each young patient with their own personal keepsake.

Alan Crowe MLC, Member for Health said,

“The Department is very grateful to Mr Hampton for this very generous donation. It is most upsetting for a young child and their family when the child is transported to hospital by ambulance. Anything that can distract the child from the distressing situation can only be a good thing and I hope these toys go some way to doing just that.”
