SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY
Aims
The Speech and Language Therapy Service offers an Island wide service, encompassing all age groups. Its purpose is to assess communication, feeding and swallowing and provide advice, referral, treatment and monitoring of patients.
The aims of the Paediatric Service are :
- To provide the Island's pre-schoolers and schoolchildren with a satisfactory assessment, review and therapy programme in order that each child reaches his or her full communication potential.
- To ensure that all children with feeding and swallowing difficulties receive prompt assessment and recommendations on feeding regimes for each individual child.
- To refer, through established protocol, children for off-Island assessment at specialist clinics. To attend with those children, when appropriate, to aid in their future management.
- To work within a multidisciplinary team, joining with representatives from Health and Education.
The aims of the Adult Service are :
- To provide an Island service to support clients presenting with communication difficulties resulting from acute and chronic medical conditions, in a hospital or community setting.
- To provide as assessment, review and treatment service to support those clients presenting with feeding and swallowing difficulties as set out in the Isle of Man's Dysphagia Policy.
- To work within a multi-disciplinary team, joining with representatives from Health and Social Services.
- To offer a consultative service to clients referred from Social Services with feeding and swallowing difficulties.
- To offer ongoing support to clients in Stoke Units, Rehabilitation Day Hospitals, Nursing and Residential Homes and Hospice.
- To accept self-referrals on condition referrals to medical professionals may be necessary.
- To refer adult clients for off-Island assessment at specialist clinics through established protocol. To attend with those adult clients, when appropriate, to aid in their future management.
- To agree to offer lecturers as part of Health Awareness promotions by Health Services and Charities.
- To carry out training sessions
- for all ward staff at Noble's, Newlands and Ramsey Cottage Hospital, caring for patients presenting with Dysphagia
- for Student Nurses at The Centre for Nurse Education.
Location
The Speech and Language Therapy Service is managed from Crookall House, Demesne Road, Douglas, and services are delivered at various locations throughout the Island. The Paediatric Service uses clinical accommodation within mainstream schools. A pre-school children service is also provided at the Pre School Assessment Centre, Ramsey Cottage Hospital or at local school-based clinics. The Adult Service offers an inpatient service at Noble's Hospital, Newlands and Ramsey Cottage Hospital. Outpatients are offered appointments at Noble's Hospital and Ramsey Cottage Hospital.
Home visits are available for both Paediatric and Adult Services, including residential and nursing homes.
