Assessment & Therapy Centre

The Ramsey Day Hospital opened in May 1991, as a unit attached to the Ramsey & District Cottage Hospital. It provides a multidisciplinary intervention for residents in the northern part of the island requiring rehabilitation or respite care. The Day Hospital is nurse led, with input as required from a General Practitioner. Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists make up the core team. This team then links with other health care disciplines as required. These include:

Voluntary services such as Age Concern and the Manx Foundation for the Physically Disabled are also incorporated in the patient’s package of care. Individual attendance is based on a clinical assessment, referral can be made by any member of the multidisciplinary team, either within the hospital or the community. The Day Hospital predominantly serves the elderly population but any person with medical / mobility problems can be considered for inclusion in a treatment programme on an outpatient day care basis. The aim is to devise a personal plan of care using a multidisciplinary approach in order to maintain each patient in their own home for as long as possible. A system of respite care also exists within the Day Hospital to enable both carer and patient to modify their lifestyles in order to accommodate any restrictions imposed by an incomplete recovery from illness. The team provides an information service to both patient and carer in relation to what support services and state benefits they may be entitled to. The staff of the Day Hospital also operate several clinics, including Rheumatoid / Medical Clinic and a Phlebotomy Clinic (blood testing)

General Wards

Ward Manager – Mrs Bernie Ross

Each ward has a Team Leader, with Associate Nurses and Health Care Assistants, who work within a team-nursing concept to provide evidence-based care to high standards.

The Registered Nurses are bound by the Nursing & Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct.

The Health Care Assistants undergo National Vocational Qualification training up to level 3.

All staff are required to work within DHSS and local policies.

General Wards Philosophy of Care

  1. We will endeavour to provide a safe environment and happy atmosphere conducive to relieving stress and promote healing.
  2. The patient will have access to their nursing notes and, on written request to the Department, to their medical notes.
  3. All aspects of patient care will be discussed in confidence and remain confidential within the “team”.
  4. We will encourage a partnership between patient and / or carer and their nurse. Nursing requirements will be based on a mutual assessment and care will be planned, delivered and evaluated by a team of professionals with varied skills, knowledge and experience. This partnership of care will continue throughout the patient’s stay.
  5. We will act as the patient’s advocate and by continually updating our nursing skills and knowledge, will provide the most appropriate care.
  6. We ill uphold the patient’s rights to privacy and dignity always and the right for the patient to refuse will be honoured.
  7. All nursing care delivered will be evidence-based.
  8. The same team of nurses will nurse the patient unless staffing levels dictate otherwise.
  9. We will provide up to date information on a wide range of aspects of good health.
  10. We will encourage comments regarding any service received whilst in RDCH and will openly display survey forms in the wards.
  11. Any complaints will be addressed, in the first instance by the Team Leader, then the Ward Manager and, if required, by the Clinical or Senior Nurse Mangers.
  12. We will participate in a weekly multi-disciplinary team meeting to discuss all aspects of discharge planning. The patient and / or carer will be involved at every stage.
