DISTRICT NURSING SERVICE

The District Nursing service provides care, support and advice to people living in the community in their own homes, or in residential care. The District Nursing Sister is a registered nurse who has undergone further training to promote health and provide skilled nursing and health care to people in their own homes.

She/he manages a team of nurses and ensures that care is appropriately planned and delivered to those who need it, whilst ensuring that other family members and/or carers receive the help and support they need. The assessment undertaken is holistic and the District Nurse will refer patients on to, and liase with, other health care professionals within the multidisciplinary team, ensuring that the services available are delivered efficiently and effectively.

The level of nursing care required by patients varies tremendously. Some have simple dressings or monthly injections, others require two or three visits per day. The service is available 365 days per year between 9:00am and 5:30pm. Patients requiring care after this time may either be visited by the Twilight service or have a night nurse in attendance.
