SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORS
Aim
The School Health Service is committed to promoting and maintaining the health of the school-age population in their social and educational environment, acknowledging ever changing needs.
There are 9 members of staff within the School Nursing Team with special responsibility:-
- Promoting healthy lifestyles in the school age population
- Child and adolescent mental health
- Chronic and complex health care needs in children and young people
- Vulnerable children and young people
School Health Advisors work with children, young people and their families.
A core programme of health surveillance and health promotion is offered to individuals, families and school communities.
The health needs of individuals referred to the service, are assessed by the School Health Advisors and services are mobilised to meet any identified need.
For all children, young people and their families with complex/special needs School Health Advisors offer a high level of support, usually as part of a multidisciplinary package.
School Health Advisors work as part of a public health team working alongside health visitors in collaboration with other professionals, parents, teachers, children, young people and voluntary organisations in the community.
Specialist Health Advisors
The School health Advisor for Special Needs has responsibility for all the Special Needs Units in schools, liasing with Educational Psychology, Team Leaders for Special Needs, Social Services and Child and Adolescent Mental Health at a weekly meeting.
The School Health Advisor for Adolescent Health works alongside educators and other professionals in the delivery of health education, targeting adolescent health-related issues, ie teenage pregnancy, sex education, sexually-transmitted disease, misuse of drugs, mental health and emotional well-being.
All school-age children who are excluded from education for any period or are in a residential unit have access to a named school health advisor.

School health advisors are regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The function of the council is to ensure that the general public are protected.
