HEALTH AGREEMENTS WITH OTHER COUNTRIES
1. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) scheme DOES NOT apply to residents of the Isle of Man, however, travellers from the Island may be able to obtain immediate and necessary (emergency) treatment in the following countries:
i) Member States of the European Union
ii) Other European Countries
iii) Rest of the World
2. Visitors to these countries will be required to pay charges for their treatment on the same basis as residents of the country visited.
3. These arrangements rarely extend to treatment as an in-patient or an out-patient.
4. The DHSS advises all travellers to take out comprehensive private health insurance to cover all eventualities which may incur health care costs whilst travelling in/visiting other countries (including the cost of repatriation to the Island).
5. In order for a Manx resident to receive healthcare in these countries, including the United Kingdom, they need to be able to prove that they live the Isle of Man. Evidence can be provided by a passport and proof of Isle of Man residence (eg. Driving Licence, NHS Card, etc.) Healthcare provided in reciprocal agreement countries may not be the same as that provided in the Isle of Man and residents may be expected to pay some additional costs, for example, ambulance transport to a hospital or the accommodation costs of staying in hospital.
