PHARMACY
General Information
The Right Medicine
Forming a vital part of the Health Service, hospital pharmacy covers a broad range of services in a variety of practice areas. Pharmacy staff work alongside other healthcare professionals to help patients and their carers get the best from medicines.
Hospital Pharmacists are healthcare professionals with the broadest and deepest expertise in the use of medicines. They are responsible for the quality, effectiveness and safety of medicines in the hospital.
Pharmacists and their technical support staff make a key contribution to clinical governance across secondary care. The pharmacy staff at Noble's have been involved in a number of initiatives to promote the safe use of medicines, such as the design of a new inpatient prescription chart and the production and review of many policies and guidelines. Pharmacy staff played a central role in ensuring the safe movement of medicines from the old site to the new hospital.
Partners in Care
Pharmacy staff work in different teams to provide a variety of services. The core pharmacy team takes responsibility for pharmaceutical services such as the purchasing and dispensing of medicines. Pharmacy staff are also involved in specialist areas such as oncology, cardiac rehabilitation and palliative care. Medicines information is another key area where pharmaceutical knowledge is of benefit to patient care.
Hospital strategic and policy teams involve pharmacists, particularly in the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee, Clinical Governance Committee, Clinical Audit Committee and Palliative Care Team
Specialist Skills
Pharmacy is a graduate profession. Pharmacists study for four years and must then complete a year's pre-registration training and pass an examination to demonstrate their competence to enter the register of their professional body the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain . They must then undertake continuing professional development to maintain competence and keep up to date throughout their careers.
Pharmacy technicians are also highly skilled and qualify after 2 years with a BTEC qualification. They may additionally be trained in aseptic dispensing and have to undertake regular re-validation tests to show that their skills meet the high standard required. Further information about Pharmacy Technicians may be obtained from the Association of Pharmacy Technicians
