GOING HOME

Your discharge from hospital | Driving

Your discharge from hospital

When the doctor says you can go home there will be a short delay whilst Pharmacy dispenses your prescription. It is usually best not to arrange transport, especially taxis, until your medicines are available on the ward to take home. If you foresee any difficulties relating to your discharge please inform the ward manager.

When you are leaving hospital what we do:

Drugs

If you need medicines, you will be given one weeks' supply to take home, for which there is no charge

Family Doctor

you will be given a letter for your family doctor with relevant information regarding your treatment. Your consultant will also write to your family doctor.

Ambulance

If ambulance transport has been arranged, owing to limited space in the ambulance, your relatives may be requested to collect equipment (e.g. Zimmer frame) following your discharge.

The ward clerk/named nurse will check your address to which your mail can be forwarded.

What you should do:

arrange for your family and friends to bring in clothes that you require for your journey home.

please make sure that hospital clothing, linen, library books etc. are not accidentally taken home.

Driving

When leaving hospital, remember that:

you should not drive for 24 hours following surgery under general anaesthetic or sedation. Please therefore arrange for someone to collect you from hospital after your surgery.
