FOUNDATION YEAR - EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES

FOUNDATION PROGRAMME INDUCTION

We run a comprehensive seven day induction programme for all new FY1 doctors which for 2008 commenced on 28th July prior to commencing ward work on 6th August.

FOUNDATION TEACHING PROGRAMME - A combined Foundation Teaching Programme runs over twelve months for FY1 and FY2.The formal educational sessions are interactive; participation is strongly encouraged and discussion is centred around case-based scenarios. The sessions mandatory and are held in Keyll Darree: the Combined Education and Training Centre on Thursday afternoons, between 2-5 p.m. These sessions are considered to be 'bleep-free' and are not interrupted by clinical duties.

Foundation Teaching Programme

In addition to the formal teaching sessions, FY1 trainees are required to satisfactorily complete two further one-day courses:

  1. Immediate Life Support (ILS)
  2. NEWS: Nobles Early Warning Score

ILS and NEWS are both held at Nobles Hospital during induction week which immediately precedes the formal start of the FY1 year in August.

FY2 trainees are required complete a:

  1. Clinical audit project. Training and preparation time for audit is provided within the educational programme. The trainees will be expected to formally present the results of their audit project.
  2. Acute Life Support (ALS) course. The ALS course will be held at Nobles Hospital

Trainees will also be encouraged to develop their teaching and training skills, and their presentation skills.

Study leave for F2 trainees will be approved for:

Study leave will not be approved for specialty College examinations, including private study, approved courses, or time off for the examination itself.

Each FY2 trainee is required to participate in one 5-day 'Taster' programme in a specialty of their choice, to gain experience working in a specialty that he/she would not otherwise be exposed to.
