SCABIES
Signs and Symptoms
Men and women tend to have similar symptoms. You may experience itching, which becomes worse at night and you may have a rash or tiny spots.
These may occur:
- On your hands, especially in between your fingers
- On the top of your wrists and elbows
- Underneath your arms
- On your abdomen and breasts (especially round the nipple in women)
- On your genitals
- Underneath your buttocks.
Transmission
Scabies is not necessarily sexually transmitted as any close physical contact can spread the infection.
Ensure all sheets and towels are not shared if you are infected with scabies.
Diagnosis and Treatment
The rash can be seen on physical examination and may be examined under a microscope. Scabies is easily treated by special shampoo or lotion which you can get from your GP, the Department of Genito-Urinary Medicine clinic or you can buy from the chemist.
You should avoid any sexual contact with anyone until the course of treatment is completed.
Long-Term Effects
You will probably not need to see the doctor, or clinic, again following treatment. If you think you have been at risk, make an appointment.
It is possible to have more than one sexually transmitted infection (STI) at the same time. It is advisable to have a full check up in the GUM clinic where you can be checked for a number of STI's.
