INDEPENDENT REVIEW BODY

The provision of the National Health Service on the Island is set out in the NHS Act 2001. A copy of which is available from the Government Information Centre

The Trained staff in the hospital and community health services do their best to ensure patients are treated promptly and with quality care. Unfortunately, as in all walks of life, sometimes standards fall below the accepted high levels set. We want to make sure that if this should happen lessons are learned.

Consequently, a system has been established to investigate complaints you may have about the service you receive from your hospital or community health professionals.

Generally, your concerns will be sorted out at once by talking to staff immediately involved in your care. If this does not resolve your concerns, you can refer the matter in writing to the Complaints Manager. This is called Local Resolution and normally you will receive a written report detailing the outcome.

If you are not satisfied you have the option of asking for your complaint to be investigated by an Independent Review Body which has no connection with the hospital or community services. The chairman will consider your request and, if it is felt justified, set up a panel which takes evidence and adjudicates on your complaint.

However, before agreeing to do so, the chairman will want to be satisfied that every attempt has been made by both parties to resolve the problem at the Local Resolution stage.

Leaflets explaining how to go about making a complaint are obtainable for the hospital or community services, any office of the Department of Health and Social Security or by writing direct to the Independent Review Body at PO Box 281, Douglas IM99 2SH.
