Community Care Support Services (CCSS)
The CCSS is a multi million pound scheme based on a strategy to provide a single health and social care record for all Manx citizens whether they are treated on the Isle of Man or elsewhere, e.g. the UK. Through secure, authenticated links a full health and social care record will be created that will permit relevant carers in primary care, hospital or social services, access to relevant information and records to assist in the delivery of care. The project is phased with the hospital being the first element, closely followed by linking in GPs, Pharmacists and other primary care carers. The final phase will be linking in social services. Starting in Summer 2006 the project will take several years to complete and will enable the IOM DHSS to share appropriate information with accredited care providers .
Centralisation of GP IT Services
This is another key project which links into the CCSS. The objective of this project is to implement a secure, robust infrastructure for GP surgeries within the Government Wide Area Network, using a single GP application, which will be hosted and managed centrally.
Some benefits of centralising GP IT services:
- Centralised connection to the UK’s national network for the NHS (N3)
- Provision of email and Internet access for all GP Practices
- Centralised support for software and hardware within GP Practices
- Access to Noble’s Hospital’s Patient Administration System
- Electronic transmission of pathology results
Other Stategies
- Isle of Man Community Pharmacy Links to Government – this project is a pilot to examine how information can be taken from the GP surgery straight to the patient’s pharmacy of choice. Again it has strong linkages with the CCSS.
- Clinical/Educational Video Conferencing Facilities – this project forms part of the modernisation agenda by using tele-links to providers of services to the island namely, multi-disciplinary teams as used in the treatment and diagnosis of cancer, and staff education, particularly for nursing and medical colleagues.
Health Trials
Chronic Asthma
The Directorate has worked with private sector organisations in investigating the benefits of using modern technology and has recently completed a trial with chronic asthma suffers using mobile telephones to assist in their treatment.

Diabetic Trial
A trail involving diabetic patients is currently being explored and it is hoped that it may be launched later in 2006.
