LITTER

Cigarette ends and packaging are forms of litter.
Most people don't drop rubbish in the street, but sometimes it is forgotten that cigarette ends are rubbish too, and so need to be disposed of thoughtfully and safely. Under the terms of the Litter Act 1972 (as amended by the Litter (Amendment) Act 2003) anyone can be fined up to £50.00 for dropping cigarette ends in the street.
Many workplaces on the Isle of Man are already designated as no-smoking buildings, so some staff take smoking breaks outside their building. This has already resulted in an increase of smoking related litter, particularly cigarette ends, in the areas outside these buildings where smokers congregate.
With the introduction of the new legislation on 30th March 2008 this type of litter is likely to increase outside pubs, bars and restaurants as well.
Cigarette ends are very difficult to remove as part of the normal street cleansing routine as they get stuck in cracks, in between paving, and negatively effect the overall image and cleanliness of the island.
With all of this in mind, Douglas Development Partnership, Douglas Corporation and the Police have produced the following guidelines below to assist businesses in developing their staff smoking policy.
