ACCIDENT PREVENTION TRAINING 2010

Are you interested in improving your skills in home safety?

One of the following courses may be of interest to you:

These courses will be held at the Ambulance Control Seminar Room, Cronk Coar, Noble’s Hospital?Site, Braddan. Commencing at 9.15 am, closing at 4.30 pm.

The courses will be delivered by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and have been organised by the DHSS Public Health Directorate.

Tuesday, 23 March 2010: Child Safety in the Home

Children under the age of five years are more at risk from an accident in the home than anywhere else. Many of these accidents are preventable. This course focuses on the most common types of home accidents affecting this age group and their prevention.

Who should attend?

All those involved with families and their children. From community groups and health professionals to statutory organisations, all have a role to play in the prevention of childhood accidents in the home.

What they will learn?

Falls, burns, scalds, poisoning and fire are the most frequent causes of serious and fatal injuries in the home.

This course will demonstrate effective measures, both behavioural and environmental, to reduce the risk of injury from these accidents.

Wednesday, 24 March 2010: Older People - Safety in the Home

The risk of accidental injury in the home increases with age.

Home accidents can lead to unnecessary pain and suffering and ultimately to increased dependency, yet so many of these accidents are preventable.

Who should attend?

Those involved with the care of older people, from health professionals through to home carers and community workers. Statutory organisations, community and voluntary groups can all help to reduce the numbers and seriousness of home accidents.

What they will learn?

Falls are the main cause of accidents in the home and this one-day course explores fall prevention methods through behavioural and environmental changes.

The course also focuses on other common accidents affecting older people, including reducing the frequency of accidental injury through fire, poisoning and scalding.

Thursday, 25 March 2010 Implementing Home Safety Checks

This course focuses on the identification of behavioural and environmental hazards in the home and the risks to families and individuals.

Communication plays an important role in the success of a home safety check. Delegates will be given the opportunity to develop and practise these skills. On completion of the course, delegates will have full use of the RoSPA-designed home safety checklist - an effective, practical tool for the conducting of home safety checks.

Who should attend?

New and existing practitioners of home safety checks will find this course invaluable.

The course is designed for home carers, health professionals, healthcare, community and voluntary workers with a home accident prevention remit. Ideally, delegates will have previously attended the Child Safety in the Home or Older People - Safety in the Home one-day course.

What will they learn?

This course focuses on the identification of behavioural and environmental hazards in the home and the risk to families and individuals.
