If you know someone who is thinking of joining the session, but are not sure if the exercises are for them, some responses from participants’ of the taster sessions include "Great fun and not too strenuous"
and "very rewarding; some exercises were easier than others for my particular abilities"
.
Chair-based programmes include exercises that strengthen the muscles used in every day activity, gradually progressing and targeting specific areas to improve their performance. This can be achieved by including tasks such as sit to stand, chair marches and stretching, or functional reaching of the arms above the head.
Practical Benefits of Chair Work
- Enables greater range of movement by providing points of leverage and support.
- Provides upper and lower body stretches and mobility work.
- Minimises load-bearing and reduces balance problems.
- Enables a mix of exercise intensity and type (e.g. endurance, resistance and balance) that would be impossible for less able individuals standing up.
Pre exercise considerations
Before you start exercising it is recommended that you speak to your doctor. While exercising, if you experience chest pain, dizziness or severe shortness of breath, stop immediately and seek medical advice.
