Tree Planting Ceremony

On the 31st July 2008, the Department of Health and Social Security held a tree planting ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the formation of the NHS.

The Sessile Oak Tree, along with a commemorative plaque, was planted along the main drive towards Noble’s Hospital. Alan Crowe MLC, Member for Health said,

“The ceremony was a very memorable occasion, made all the more special by the presence of our honoured guests, who represent an unbroken chain of experience of being cared for by the Manx Health Services. Our first honoured guest was Mrs Mary Carter MBE, who was 21 years of age when the Manx Health Service was formed. Secondly we had with us Mrs Norma Halsall, who was born on 5th July 1948, one of seven children born that day – the very day the Manx Health Service was formed. And last, but by no means least, we had with us three very special and important guests – the three babies who were born here on the Isle of Man on 5th July 2008, exactly 60 years after the health service was founded – Leia Campbell, Jamie Kerron Corkill and Teagan Miah Webb.”

Mr Crowe added,

“I hope that by planting this tree, a symbol of growth for the future, we too are building on the foundations laid in 1948 and I hope that in 40 years time, the children here today – who by then will be 40 years old, will be able to return to this spot, to celebrate their very special link with a health service, which will then be 100 years old, and feel that we too have built on strong foundations.”

Central Elderly Mental Infirm Unit (EMI) Brick Laying Ceremony - 23rd May 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security recently held a brick laying ceremony to mark the commencement of the Central Elderly Mentally Infirm Unit build, at Farmhill.

Attendees at the ceremony included; Hon W E Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security, David Killip, DHSS Chief Executive, Dudley Butt MLC, Member for Social Services, members of the Mental Health Team, service users and representatives from contactors Dandara. The honour of laying the brick was handed to service user Mr. Ivor Quale.

Dudley Butt MLC, Member for Social Services said,

“This is the beginning of a major improvement in service delivery for some of the most vulnerable people in our community. Meeting the challenge of providing services which meet the needs of an increasingly ageing population is an imperative issue and, within that, there is a growing demand for improved services for the care and support of people with dementia. I am sure this new facility will provide that high standard of quality service for many years to come.”

Mr Butt added,

“Over one in five people over the age of 85 are directly affected by dementia. The Isle of Man has a population that is ageing ahead of our neighbours and, over the coming years, is set to see a large increase in the over 85 age group. This is one step the Isle of Man Government is taking to rise to that challenge and the Department of Health and Social Security is committed to providing the best quality services possible for the people of the Isle of Man.”

Mr Butt continued,

“The Central EMI Unit has been a long time in preparation and I would like to thank Minister Teare, Dandara and the various Departmental staff who have contributed to the planning and development of this new build.”

The Central EMI Unit will initially provide sixteen rooms in total, with twelve long stay rooms and four short term care rooms. The facility also has scope for development, as it incorporates a built in flexibility which will allow the provision of a further sixteen rooms, should they be required, at no extra building costs.

Mental Health Rehab Facility Sod Cutting Ceremony - 15th May 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security recently held a sod cutting ceremony to mark the commencement of the new 16 bed Mental Health Rehab facility build, on the former Ballamona Hospital site, on land between Grianagh Court and Reayrt Noa.

The sod was cut by Dudley Butt MLC, Member for Social Services, and service user Elaine Haynes.

Dudley Butt MLC, Member for Social Services said,

“As the quality in service and care improves and advances, so too must the buildings in which that service is provided. Therefore, this new purpose built facility will enable the Mental Health Rehabilitation Service to provide a much improved standard of care to the population of the Isle of Man.”

Mandy Cain, Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Manager said,

“The rehabilitation team are excited and enthused to move to the new build. Staff will be able to provide an improved service, which will enable people to recover from a period of mental ill health within a modern, bright and purpose built facility. The new development facility will enable the staff to deliver excellence in rehabilitation packages of care to the Island’s public.”

The new facility will provide 16 en-suite bedrooms, therapy rooms, interview rooms, a visitors’ room and will have an enhanced security layout in order to promote and ensure the safety of both service users and staff. The facility will comply with modern day standards required to provide a high calibre of mental health rehabilitation and treatment. The new facility will also provide an option to enable some service users who are currently placed off Island to be returned and offered a high standard of service locally.

The new facility will replace the existing premises at Tynwald Terrace in Strang, Braddan, which is now considered unsuitable for meeting the required needs of patients receiving treatment and rehabilitation programmes.

The build is estimated to be completed by March 2009.
