Radical proposals to streamline Government’s structure were introduced by the Chief Minister on 1 April 2014. "Recommendation 3" recommended the merger of Health and Social Care functions. Please see the CoMIN Report.

The Department of Health and Social Care is responsible for running the Island’s National Health Service though providing a Mental Health Service; acute care at Noble’s Hospital and off-Island referrals to specialist centres of excellence in the North West of England; and care in the community setting such as GP services, community nursing and health centres.

The Department is also responsible for providing social care services such as social work, residential homes and supporting those with learning disabilities. 

In addition the Department’s responsibilities includes functions relating to housing, such as managing and allocating a stock of 1,200 public sector properties and  operating a Register of First Time Buyers requiring assistance.

The Department has commissioned the West Midlands Quality Review Service to undertake a rolling programmed of external independent quality assurance of Isle of Man health services over the next three years, commwncing in 2013.  Three reviews will take place each year covering a number of linked pathways or services.  The first Review took place on the 26 November 2013 in Noble's Hospital Emergency Department, Critical Care and Theatre and Anaesthetic Services.
