Education and training

Prisoners have been successful in gaining many academic and vocational qualifications over recent years.

Tutors from the IoM College come in to the prison to deliver courses including basic literacy and numeracy, Information Technology, Arts and Crafts, Music (practical guitar playing), P.S.H.E. and general academic subjects.

Vocational training, leading towards a recognised qualification, (NVQ), is also offered in catering and industrial cleaning. These courses are designed to equip prisoners with useful qualifications to assist prisoners with obtaining employment following release.

Jurby prison has purpose-built education and vocational training facilities including classrooms, and workshops where prisoners will be able to receive training in painting and decorating, joinery, and plumbing skills.

Prisoners will be expected, as part of their individual resettlement sentence plans, to partake in both education and vocational training programmes.
