Isle of Man Constabulary
Road Policing Unit
Reducing casualties – improving standards – denying criminals use of the roads
These are the strategic aims of the Road Policing Unit based at Police Headquarters. The unit forms part of the Operations Support Services and is intended to support the Neighbourhood Policing Teams in delivering their policing plans as well as providing an expert service in collision investigation. The Unit is staffed by a Sergeant and eight Constables, assisted by an office manager.
The unit provides specialist support to the Neighbourhood Policing Teams in all matters concerning the roads. This can range from management of serious and fatal collisions, assistance with road safety campaigns and speed enforcement through to escorting abnormal loads across the Island’s road network.
The Unit takes a big lead in improving standards through education in conjunction with the Department of Transport and by working in partnership with the Institute of Advanced Motorists for aspects of driver training.
Close liaison with the Department of Transport, vehicle examiners, road safety and engineering units, ensures that effective, joined-up working maximises the efforts of all partners in road safety.
The Unit currently focuses much of its attention on identifying and targeting young dangerous drivers through Operation Carbon. This operation is designed to prevent young drivers from driving dangerously and causing serious road collisions which often result in serious or fatal injuries.
Headed by Officer in Charge Inspector Richard Power, the Unit also provides VIP security escort, driver training and specialised collision investigation as well as a highly reassurance with its fleet.
The RPU currently operates two Range Rover TD6, one TDV8, one Ford SMax 2.5, oand a range of unmarked enforcement cars. The motorcycle wing consists of five Honda Pan Europeans.
