George Turnbull
Author George Turnbull was born in Balladoole, Arbory on 4th June 1915.
He was educated at Arbory Parish School and joined the Isle of Man Constabulary on 12th July 1937. In 1942, he joined the Royal Armoured Corps as a fitter and took part in the D-Day landings in June 1944. He completed his military service in 1946 and then rejoined the Isle of Man Constabulary.
George Turnbull was promoted to Sergeant in 1956 and took charge of the CID in 1960. From 1966 until his retirement in 1970, he served as Inspector in Charge of Prosecutions. During his long career, Inspector Turnbull received many commendations for outstanding work.
He completed the Isle of Man Constabulary book shortly before his death on 28 October 1981. It was published by his widow in 1984 and is now out of print but remains the definitive history of the Island’s police.
