Crime and Intelligence Department
The function of the Crime and Intelligence Department is to support the Neighbourhood Policing Teams in the prevention and detection of crime.
The department provides detectives to assist in the investigation of the more serious offences. The CID is divided into five departments:
- Public Protection Unit – staff within this unit work on a multi-agency basis and provide a Force response in relation to Domestic Abuse, Child Protection, Sex Offender registration and Youth Justice.
- Force Intelligence Bureau – has responsibility for the collation and dissemination of intelligence. Such intelligence is used to inform or task Neighbourhood Policing Teams and departments, in line with the National Intelligence Model.
- Drug Trafficking Unit – under the National Intelligence Model the team provides a proactive response to crime, in particular the importation and supplying of controlled drugs.
- Reactive CID – provide specialist crime investigators to assist the Neighbourhood Policing Teams in the investigation of crime.
- Scenes of Crime Department – provides forensic investigators who attend crime scenes to look for evidence such as fingerprints or DNA which would assist the investigation.
