Police History

Mike Culverhouse 1999-2007

The Manx police continued to develop and modernise under Mike Culverhouse, who became the eighth Chief Constable when he was appointed to the post in 1999.

Chief Constable Mike CulverhouseThe growth in legislation to assist in protecting the public continued and resulted in the Constabulary creating a post specifically to monitor and register the behaviour of convicted sex offenders on the Island, and to assist the United Kingdom in monitoring travelling sex offenders.

Maintaining confidence in the Island’s financial institutions remained a key priority for the Constabulary and the Financial Crimes Unit was re-structured on a multi-agency basis working closely with the Financial Supervision Commission, Customs and Excise and H. M. Attorney General’s Chambers.

In 2006 the Force underwent a major re-structuring programme moving to a neighbourhood policing model. Five neighbourhood policing teams were created centring in Douglas, Peel, Ramsey, Port Erin and Onchan. These neighbourhood teams are led by Inspectors who are empowered to provide local solutions to local problems. The emphasis on the Island’s policing moved towards local consultation to deal with local problems .

Mr. Culverhouse retired from the Isle of Man Constabulary on December 31, 2007.
