Special Interest

Recent exercises co-ordinated by the Emergency Planning Office include two table top exercises in conjunction with the Department of Health and Social Security exploring the likely effects of pandemic flu on the Island.

In addition, more than 100 Isle of Man-based delegates attended a three-day conference in October 2006 covering a wide range of topics including pandemic flu, business continuity, legal implications of disaster, and tactical decision making under stress. Various sessions heard first-hand accounts from people involved with incidents in the UK, including the 7/7 London bombings, the Buncefield fire and the Marchioness disaster.

New equipment

New Vehicle - former RAF exhibition/display unitThe Division has recently taken delivery of a former RAF exhibition/display unit. This will be used in support of promotional activities and will be available for use in an emergency as a co-ordination vehicle or as a mobile Police Station.

Recent incidents

Civil Defence Corps members were involved in two call outs during October 2006: Firstly to work alongside Police, Coastguards and Search Dogs following a report of cries for help in the Druidale area, then to assist with sandbag delivery and flood/salvage during prolonged heavy rain.

Training

Civil Defence staged two one-day training sessions in November for individuals who may need to give evidence at Public Enquiries following a major incident. As well as familiarising them with court room procedures, the sessions emphasised the importance of maintaining notes at the time they are dealing with the emergency as these may have to be relied on many years later. Initial planning is underway for a major live exercise in 2007.
