Communications Division
Who we are
The Communications Division has responsibility within the Department of Home Affairs for all matters in respect of Government radio communications. The division exists to support the Department’s aim of providing appropriate and effective communications infrastructure and the delivery of high quality services to the Emergency Services and the residents of the Isle of Man.
Robert Williamson heads the team at Communications House, the headquarters of the division.
Robert joined the Isle of Man Government in 1990 with the remit of establishing a Government organisation responsible for the provision of communications. The Communications Division now has responsibility for the provision, management and maintenance of the Isle of Man Government communications infrastructure and systems including those used by the Emergency Services and other departments of Government.
In 1998 Robert’s division embarked upon two key initiatives which are the cornerstones of the Isle of Man Government Strategic Policy in respect of communications. These initiatives being the implementation of a Digital Trunked Radio communications infrastructure to support all Government mobile communications requirements and the parallel establishment of an Emergency Services Joint Control Room comprising a new communications control building and associated IT infrastructure to support Police, Fire and Ambulance. These initiatives were successfully implemented in April 2004.
Robert, who was born on the Isle of Man, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering. He began his career in communications in the Merchant Navy with BP shipping. In 1979 he moved to the North Sea operations with BP as a communications engineer in the offshore oil and gas industry.
