Consolidation

This process is relevant to farmers who have lost tenanted land between the 2008 census and their 2009 application to the Countryside Care Scheme. It enables affected farmers to retain 100% of their Historic Entitlement despite the loss of land, provided that they retain 80% of their total farmed area. If more than 20% of land is lost, the farmer will be left with Historic Entitlements which cannot be claimed against because there is insufficient land available (each entitlement has to be matched by one eligible acre). In these circumstances, the farmer can retain the entitlements in the hope of obtaining land against which to claim them in future years or they can transfer them to another farmer, for a fee.

To determine the effect of loss of tenanted land, and to calculate the percentage of Historic Entitlement which can be claimed, please use the Consolidation Calculator on this page. It is an Excel spreadsheet so just input the requested figures and the result will be calculated for you.

This process is more fully described in chapter 1 of the Farmer's Handbook and affected farmers should read this section carefully before pursueing consolidation. Please note that consolidation is only available in the 2009 Scheme Year and must be applied for on the Countryside Care Scheme application form.
