Importation of Pigs into the Isle of Man from Great Britain

Requirements prior to importation:

Disinfection: Arrangements must have been made before the time of Health Certification for the cleansing and disinfection of vehicles for the transport of the animals. Detailed advice on the current requirements should be sought from the local Animal Health Office of DEFRA.

Sample Conditions of Licence to Import Pigs into the Isle of Man from the Great Britain

  1. No pig shall be landed in the Isle of Man without a licence issued by an Authorised Officer of the Department, and such licence shall expire after 21 days.
  2. All pigs must be accompanied by a health certificate 6964 EHC.
  3. Current Health requirements include:
    • Inspection by an Official Veterinarian (OV) within 24 hours of scheduled departure to th Isle of Man; in order to certify that the animals are free from signs and symptoms of infectious and contagious disease, comply with Directive 64/432/EEC and are fit to travel.
    • Have been resident on the holding of origin for a minimum of 30 days or since birth.
    • Come from a holding of origin and an area which, in conformity with Community or National legislation, is not subject to any prohibition or restriction for reasons of animal disease affecting porcine animals.
    • Great Britain is free of Aujesky's Disease in accordance with Commission Dec ision 2001/618/EC.
  4. Time and date of sailing must be notified in advance (2 working days) to the Animal Health Division. This licence only to be delivered on embarkation to the Captain of the Vessel or Aircraft, or his representative, for submission as soon as possible to the Animal Health Division at Top Floor, Rose House, 51-59 Circular Road, Douglas. All other relevant documents and certificates must accompany the animals in transit to the final destination in the Isle of Man, and be retained there for further inspection.
  5. All animals must be transported, without coming into contact with animals not similarly certified, by the specified route. On arrival, they must be taken directly to the premises specified, and there, shall be isolated from all other animals for the prescribed period. They may be subjected to further detention, examination, test or medication laid down by a Government Veterinary Officer in order to prevent the introduction and possible spread of animal disease.
  6. Minimum period of isolation seven (7) days.
  7. Within 21 days of import, no imported pig shall be moved from that holding, except direct to slaughter under licence.

European Union imports (not Great Britain) Imports from the EU do not require an import licence being covered by the Animal and Animal Products (Import and Export) Order 2001.

24 hours notice (working days) is required to be given to the Division prior to the actual import. Imports must be accompanied by the relevant EU Health documentation and transport documentation.

Transporting and landing animals without the required documentation is an offence. Failure to produce the required valid documentation will result in the return of the consignment to the point of origin at the importers expense.
