Farmers

Some farm waste materials such as silage effluent, waste milk and slurry can, if released into watercourses, seriously damage the environment as well as causing a health risk to the general public.

Farmers are therefore encouraged to provide adequate storage and safe methods of disposal of waste products.

"The Code of Good Agricultural Practice for the Protection of Water" was sent to all farmers on the Island in 2001. This provides a backup to the free advisory service provided by the Department. If having read the Code farmers still have any queries especially with the siting and size of storage facilities for waste products they should contact the agricultural advisory staff.
