‘Earned Citizenship’ Proposals

The United Kingdom Border Agency has conducted a public consultation on proposals to introduce a new points-based test for achieving British citizenship, based on points to be awarded for positive attributes and skills. More information is available at http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/

These are only proposals at this stage, but if they do result in additional requirements for British citizenship these would be expected to apply in the Isle of Man as well as the United Kingdom. At present foreign nationals applying for British citizenship in the Isle of Man have to demonstrate knowledge of the English language, and of life in the Isle of Man and UK, as well as satisfying residential criteria.
