It is proposed that some small-scale artificial reefs made out of redundant submarine telephone cables could be created near to Port Erin. A pilot-scale trial could investigate the environmental benefits and impacts of these reefs over a 3-year period.
The success of artificial reefs has been proven, world-wide. When a suitable artificial reef structure is placed in the sea it rapidly attracts marine life. Fish are immediately attracted, and within weeks the structures become encrusted with marine life. Before long these artificial reefs become thriving habitats.
