Appointment of Her Majesty's Solicitor General
Applications are invited by the Crown for the appointment of Her Majesty's Solicitor General of the Isle of Man.
Her Majesty's Solicitor General will support and assist Her Majesty's Attorney General and together with Her Majesty's Attorney General will act as legal adviser to the Lieutenant Governor, the Council of Ministers and the Departments of the Isle of Man Government and such Statutory Boards as the Council of Ministers may determine in relation to matters of law and official matters which are relevant to the Island's domestic and external interests.
Her Majesty's Solicitor General will support and assist Her Majesty's Attorney General in his representation of the Crown in the prosecution of offences on the Island and in general terms support and assist Her Majesty's Attorney General in the performance of his duties in all matters but subject always to any directions Her Majesty's Attorney General may give. In particular Her Majesty's Solicitor General will initially take the lead in managing the Advisory and Legislative Drafting Teams engaged in the Attorney General's Chambers but his priorities may thereafter change from time to time.
Her Majesty's Solicitor General, with the permission of the President of Tynwald, will also on occasions when Her Majesty's Attorney General is absent attend sittings of the Legislative Council and Tynwald.
The appointment will be made by Her Majesty The Queen, based on the recommendation of the Selection Panel. Candidates for this position must meet the following criteria:
- A qualified Manx advocate or a Solicitor qualified in England and Wales or Northern Ireland or a member of the Bar in England and Wales or Northern Ireland;
- At least 10 years' experience in practice at the Manx Bar or equivalent experience in a similar jurisdiction whether in independent practice or employed;;
- A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Law and practice in the Isle of Man;
- A comprehensive knowledge of court practices and procedures;
- A high level of professional attainment in the practice of law
The position will be subject to the Isle of Man Civil Service Regulations, modified as necessary to meet the specific requirements of the post of Her Majesty's Solicitor General.
