The Isle of Man College with organisational support from DEFA and employers financial support given by the Department of Economic Development run a series of land-based NVQ's. These currently are Level 2 in Mixed Farming, Livestock Production and Environmental Conservation. Level 3 in Mixed Farming and Livestock Production and Level 4 in Livestock Management and Crop Management.
Each candidate begins with attendance of an Introductory Week in October. Assessments to see if candidates are competent then usually take place in the workplace. During the year a series of short courses and visits are also organised for the candidates. Emphasis is placed on health and safety in the workplace and environmental matters.
DEFA provide a range of NPTC/City & Guilds qualifications these include:
- Safe application of Pesticides
- PA2 Boom Sprayers
- PA6A & PA6AW
Hand held applicators Livestock
- Transport of Livestock (short Journeys)
- Sheep dipping Mowers
- Ride on
Several other courses are organised by DEFA when it is felt there is a need for farmers on the Island to be better informed in some matters.
