Adopt a Composer graphicADOPT A COMPOSER: New music through collaboration

Following eight highly-successful years, the Adopt a Composer scheme is to continue in 2009/10, thanks to £25,000 from the PRS Foundation. The scheme, run by Sound and Music and Making Music, enables voluntary music groups to have a new piece of music especially composed for them by some of the UK’s most talented young composers.

BBC Radio 3 has also committed to recording performances of all the resulting work from this year’s scheme. The decision to continue follows a recent independent review that showed an overwhelming positive response from participating ensembles and the unique opportunity for professional and artistic development such collaboration allows.

Once selected, six groups and six composers from around the UK are arranged into pairs, and each pair is mentored by an established professional composer. Over the course of 12 months, they work together to produce a work that is tailor made for the skills and interests of the group members. For many groups, this is their first encounter with contemporary music and the world of the composer. For the composers, this is often their first work for a large-scale group, working in the community. Each project culminates in première performance, which will be recorded by BBC Radio 3 for broadcast later in the year.

Adopt a Composer is managed by Making Music and Sound and Music, and funded by the PRS Foundation. For more information contact Sarah Robinson at Making Music on 020 7422 8291 or by email at sarah.robinson@makingmusic.org.uk.

Manx Ballet Company

19th - 21st February 2010: THE MANX BALLET COMPANY presents La Fille Mal Gardee (The Wayward Daughter)

This is a full length ballet comique at the Gaiety Theatre, starting at 7.30pm with a matinee at 2.30pm on Sunday 21st February. The Principal dancers will guests from Ballet West, Scotland, and well-known local dancers Gena Walker and Sonia Callin. The student dancers represent the following dance schools: Christine Wild Theatre School, Dancers' Barre, Gena Walker Academy of Dance, Mannin School of Ballet, The Academy of Dance and the Vicky Price School of Ballet.

When country beauty, Lise, falls in love with handsome farm lad Colas, she's about to upset the butter churn! Her mother, Widow Simone, is not at all pleased, as she has her own ideas about the man her pretty (but wilful) daughter should marry. Pompous and wealthy vineyard owner Thomas has a son - as attractive as a radish, smart as a potato and as clumsy as a mule. All set out to meet their heart's desires in an unintentionally comical way!

An absolutely charming ballet for the whole family.

Men of the World

24th to 27th February 2010: The Arts Council presents MEN OF THE WORLD - by John Godber

The Arts Council is delighted to present Hull Truck Theatre's production of Men of the World, written and directed by John Godber.

Join Stick, Frank and Happy Larry (two men and a woman!) as they embark on another coach journey down the Rhine Valley….these long suffering drivers have seen it all and done it all; they head towards the Channel Tunnel with thirty old age pensioners, search for lost teeth in Koblenz and witness love affairs in Boppard…and after a four-day ‘Umpah’ party they make the long journey back. Funny, sad and cinematic you’ll be amazed at Stick, Frank and Happy Larry as they play many of the pensioners in a total evocation of a bus trip. Touching, funny and provoking comedy written by one of the nation’s leading comedy playwrights!

**** John Godber turns a bad trip into a brilliant night out. The Guardian ****

Tickets are available from the Ticket Hotline on 600555, online at www.villagaiety.com, or at the Welcome Centre.
